Mount Othrys lies on the borders of Magnesia Prefecture incentral Greece. Its rocky, dry soils create perfect conditions for growing herbs. In Ancient Greek mythology it was the divine mountain of the Titans and home to the kingdom of the Myrmidons led by Achilles.
Myth has it that the Titans were the sons and daughters of Gaia and Uranus. The Ancient Greeks believed Mt. Othrys was the Titans’ base in the war they waged against Zeus and the other Olympian gods. In fact, the Titanomachy mentions that huge boulders were flung from there towards Mt. Olympus.
Mythology has it that Achilles’ kingdom of the Myrmidons, dating from the time of the Homeric epics, was also located at Mt. Othrys. Achilles was son of Peleus and Thetis. Homer’s Iliad recounts that the Myrmidon warriors led by Achilles played a leading role in the Trojan War.
The products are still picked every year in May and June in the traditional way. They are then carefully cleaned and dried in the shade at ambient temperature to preserve all their scent and flavour.
WAY OF COLLECTION AND DRYING
100% TRADITIONAL & NATURAL
Aromatic plants first began to be cultivated in the Mt. Othrys area in the early 1960s, with mountain tea which was planted at locations where the plants grew naturally. This gradually developed into the main occupation for locals, and over the years they expanded on this by cultivating new species of aromatic plants.
